Ambulance trust withdraws NHS 111 service

An ambulance trust is blaming staff shortages as the reason for why it is having to stop providing the NHS 111 phone service.

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) will hand back its NHS 111 contract to Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust, saying that the service has struggled to necessary staffing levels needed to operate the service.

The trust also released a statement saying that it did not have other call centres that were able to handle queuing calls for its Dorset service in 'times of extremis'.

Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust is now looking to find a new provider for the service.
