Cold weather warning extended

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has extended the level 3 cold weather alert until 9am on Monday 23 January.

There is a risk of snow and ice across much of the country and people are encouraged to stay warm and look out for those most at risk.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said: "Cold weather can have a serious impact on health, particularly older people and those with pre-existing health conditions, as it increases the risks of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections.

"During this period, it is important to check in on family, friends and relatives who may be more vulnerable to the cold weather. If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over the age of 65, it is important to try and heat your home to at least 18°C if you can.

According to the Met Office: "There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather and icy conditions between 0900 on Wednesday 18 Jan and 0900 on Monday 23 Jan in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services." The alert applies to all of England.

Advice on the Met Office website states: "Look out for friends and family who may be vulnerable to the cold, and ensure they have access to warm food and drinks and are managing to heat their homes adequately. Try to maintain indoor temperatures to at least 18°C, particularly if you are not mobile, have a long-term illness or are 65 or over. Avoid exposing yourself to cold or icy outdoor conditions if you are at a higher risk of cold-related illness or falls and stay up to date with the latest weather forecasts on the Met Office website."
