Wales proposes restrictions on unhealthy food

Welsh cabinet secretary for health and social care, Eluned Morgan, has launched a consultation for legislation that would restrict promotions of food products high in fat, sugar and salt by location and price.

She has also published a draft text of the regulations.

The consultation outlines the proposed legislation associated with the first phase of the action, which is intended to improve the food environment.

According to Morgan, evidence shows that food products with poor nutritional value are currently disproportionately promoted more than healthier products.

The draft Regulations set out location and price promotion restrictions on less healthy products, as well as restrictions for sugary drink refills.

The government intends to lay the legislation in the Senedd before the end of 2024, and will come into force in 2025, subject to Senedd approval.
