New NHS pay rise for NHS staff still ‘too little’ says poll

Polling for LabourList has found that the majority of UK adults believe NHS workers should get a bigger pay rise than the one currently on offer from the government as the three per cent being proposed is ‘too little’.

The government recently confirmed that it would accept the recommendations of pay review bodies and offer a three per cent rise for some NHS staff. Labour has described this as a ‘let down’ and highlighted that it is not an NHS-wide pay award.

New research by Savanta ComRes has found that 60 per cent of UK adults think the three per cent pay rise announced by the government was either ‘a little too little’ (27 per cent) or ‘much too little’ (33 per cent). Conversely, 15 per cent said it was ‘too much’ and 23 per cent ‘about right’.

When questioned on how big the pay rise should be, 47 per cent chose a figure between four per cent and nine per cent, with 32 per cent choosing 10 per cent or above and 21 per cent choosing up to three per cent.

The exclusive LabourList poll also revealed that 44 per cent oppose freezing the pay of police and teachers in England this year, equivalent to a real-terms pay cut.
