The Welsh minister for health and social services, Eluned Morgan had provided an update on lung screening in Wales.
The announcement follows a meeting of the UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) in June 2022, where it was recommended to provide targeted lung cancer screening with integrated smoking cessation in people aged 55-74 years with a history of smoking. The Wales Screening Committee accepted this recommendation in principle in November 2022.
The Welsh Government has also accepted the recommendation and is considering how this could be delivered in Wales. The government is working with Public Health Wales to explore options on the approach for a national programme for Wales.
An operational pilot will also be carried out this year to inform any potential future wider roll-out.
Morgan said: "Taking this work forward, we want to engage and include voices and views from people in Wales, charities and all relevant multidisciplinary professionals and service areas. We are also working with Scotland and England to identify the optimal pathway, which has not yet been determined."
