Those experiencing vaginal dryness resulting from the menopause will now be able to get treatment over the counter in the UK as part of hormone replacement therapy treatment (HRT).
Estradiol tablets (with the brand name Gina10) were previously only available on prescription.
The tablets will be available to those over the age of 50 who have not had a period for over a year.
The tablets can be used to treat symptoms caused by a lack of oestrogen, including vaginal dryness, soreness and itching and uncomfortable sex. The tablets are inserted into the vagina, not taken orally.
Training is available to pharmacists to identify who needs the treatment.
The decision to provide the tablets over the counter was made by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to make menopause treatment more accessible.
MHRA chief healthcare quality and access officer Dr Laura Squire said: "In reaching this decision, we have seen positive support from a wide range of people, including many women aged 50 years and above who could benefit from this decision."
